About This Safari

Ngorongoro Crater, located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area of northern Tanzania, is one of the most iconic wildlife destinations in the world. Often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” it is the largest unbroken volcanic caldera in the world, with a diameter of about 20 kilometres. The crater floor is home to an abundance of wildlife, including the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino).

The Ngorongoro Crater offers breathtaking views, a variety of ecosystems, and the opportunity to witness wildlife. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is easily accessible from Arusha, making it a popular stop for those on a Tanzania Safari.

Tour Details

Day Tour
Ngorongoro Day Trip Game Drive

5:30 AM – Departure from Arusha / Karatu

  • Why so early? The best wildlife sightings happen in the early morning hours when animals are most active.
  • Your guide and safari vehicle (usually a 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof) will arrive early at your lodge or hotel.
  • Enjoy a quick breakfast or take a packed one along.

Tip: Bring warm clothing for the early morning – the Crater rim can be quite chilly.

7:30 AM – Arrive at Ngorongoro Crater Rim

  • The drive winds through misty highlands and lush rainforest. As you climb to the rim (about 2,300 meters), the world seems to fall away behind you.
  • First stop: Crater Viewpoint. Step out and soak in the sheer scale of this collapsed volcano. The caldera stretches 19 km across, teeming with life in every direction.

Photo moment: Early morning mist rolling across the floor, the sun rising behind the rim, and maybe even a Maasai herder in the distance.

8:00 AM – Descend into the Crater (Game Drive Begins)

  • The descent is exciting – a narrow road hugs the cliff as you head 600 meters down into the world's largest intact caldera.
  • Inside the Crater: It’s like stepping into a real-life Eden. Over 25,000 animals reside here, including:
    • Lions (look for them lounging on the open plains)
    • Elephants (especially near the Lerai Forest)
    • Black rhinos (one of the best places in Tanzania to spot them)
    • Hippos in pools and wallowing in the Ngoitokitok Springs
    • Buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, jackals, and a dazzling array of birdlife.

Your guide will tailor the drive based on the day’s sightings, weather, and your interests. You’ll likely stop often – whether it’s a pride of lions on the move or a secretary bird stalking prey.

12:30 PM – Picnic Lunch at Ngoitokitok Springs

  • This is one of the few designated picnic sites inside the Crater.
  • Enjoy a boxed lunch with a view – a lush swamp alive with hippos and flocks of birds.
  • Watch out for cheeky kites (birds of prey) that might swoop in for your sandwich!
  • Stretch your legs and chat with fellow travelers – you’re all in awe of the same thing.

1:30 PM – Continue Game Drive or Optional Cultural Stop

  • Depending on your pace and energy, you can either continue exploring:
    • Drive toward the Mandusi or Gorigor Swamps for more wildlife sightings.
    • Visit the Lerai Forest – a haven for elephants and rare birds.
  • Optional detour (time-permitting): Stop at a nearby Maasai boma (village) just outside the Crater. Meet local Maasai families, learn about their traditions, and hear stories passed down through generations.

3:30 PM – Ascend from the Crater & Begin Return Journey

  • As you slowly drive up the crater wall, take one last look at the world you’ve just explored.
  • Reflect on how much life exists in such a compact space – it’s humbling and almost surreal.

5:00 PM – Coffee Stop (Optional)

  • If returning via Karatu, consider a stop at one of the local coffee estates or cafes.
  • Sip a warm Tanzanian brew as the sun begins to set behind the Rift Valley escarpment.

6:30 – 7:00 PM – Arrive Back at Your Lodge / Hotel

  • You’re back, dusty and satisfied, camera full and heart fuller.
  • A hot shower, a hearty dinner, and perhaps a glass of wine to toast a day you’ll never forget.
